My favorite cruise experience second to none. Three hundred passengers, three dining options and Michelin 2 star chef inspired cuisine. Travelling through the most beautiful islands in the world. The Paul Gauguin is absolutely the best way to see Tahiti whether for first time or revisiting.  I have been on the Paul Gauguin four times. The last was June 2016 when my wife and I hosted a small group of six couples. It is perfect for trial honeymoons, trial honeymoons, families and small groups of friends. French Polynesia’s Society Islands are legendary: Bora Bora, Moorea, Tahiti. Each is paradise in its own right, but only one is also steeped in myth – Moorea. The island’s crystalline lagoon is protected from the sea by a gorgeous coral reef, so conditions for swimming and snorkeling are simply ideal. The fronds of swaying coconut palms rustle at the water’s edge. And away from the shore, coffee and pineapple plantations roll over the fertile hillsides. The island beckoned Captain Bligh’s crew to mutiny. What of the myth, you ask? Mt. Rotui starred in the movie musical South Pacific as the magical Bali Ha’i.

Our day will begin with a visit to the Opunohu Valley. The lush vegetation of Moorea is on display as we see both native and imported plants that now flourish on the island. At the top of the valley we will stop to see the spectacular view from Mount Belvedere, at the island’s heart (the isle is only a 37-mile circuit in total), which allows for amazing views of Moorea’s other dramatic scenery – Opunoho Bay, Cook’s Bay, and Mt. Rotui. We’ll then travel along the coast to visit an ancient archaeological dig where we will hear about the first settlers and how they established their life here. Our drive will continue through the back roads to see the interior of both valleys including the vast fields of agricultural crops grown on the island. We emerge back at the coast via the village of Pao Pao at Cook's Bay and then drive up the west shore to the Atitia Cultural Center where we will talk about traditional Polynesian culture and how people here are working to preserve it.  Then just down the road we will make a short stop at the UC Berkeley Gump Research Station to talk about community projects concerning the coral reefs, biodiversity and other research programs.

A light lunch has been reserved at the Intercontinental Resort Moorea, featuring a menu of fresh local specialties and delicious wines. After lunch, we will visit the Kellum House and Gardens for a tour and discussion of the remarkable history of this American family who settled on the island in 1924.

Suggested Attire/Walking Notes: Casual resort wear with a sun hat and comfortable shoes. Light walking.
